A beginner’s introductory course going from being able to finding things on the internet to the basics of email. These are essential skills in today’s world, and important that we understand how to do them safely.

This is a 5 week course for those completely new to computing. Being new starters, you will need lots of time and direct support to gain the basic skills, so the aims of the course are modest. These are more group sessions than formal classes. You will be using standard computers in the class so everything should be similar to other machines – you are however most welcome to bring your own laptop and tablet, etc.

We start from the very beginning, the keyboard and mouse, and the screen along with where things are. From there we focus on essential skills in accessing and using the internet safely, with a brief look at social media. More advanced skills are covered in later courses.

The Getting Started course will be followed by another short course, Next Steps, preparing you for the Beginners’ course

Computing for Beginners

This is a 10 week course for those who have already started computing, and have gained the most basic skills. These are more group sessions than formal classes. You will be able to confidently use the mouse and keyboard and maybe basic visiting websites.

Everyone will be using standard computers in the class so everything should be similar to other machines – you are however welcome to bring your own laptop and tablet, etc. You will need a modern smart phone for later in the course in order to access email etc.

Starting from the essential skills of accessing and using the internet safely, we move onto registering and logging in to websites. Email is an important topic today and covered extensively, followed by video conferencing (eg Zoom) and social media. There is normally time to include extra appropriate topics suggested by the students. You will throughout have the opportunity to practise using your own mobile device.
