001E0(2311) New Starters’ Computing (Northolt – Saturdays)

Introduction

A 5 week course for those completely new to computing going from being able to finding things on the internet to the basics of email. These are essential skills in today’s world, and important that we understand how to do them safely.

This course is part of our Ealing classes programme. You must be enrolled in the class to participate and your teacher can help register you.

Being new starters, you will need lots of time and direct support to gain the basic skills, so the aims of the course are modest. These are more group sessions than formal classes. You will be using standard computers in the class so everything should be similar to other machines – you are however most welcome to bring your own laptop and tablet, etc.

We start from the very beginning, the keyboard and mouse, and the screen along with where things are. From there we focus on essential skills in accessing and using the internet safely, with a brief look at social media.

More advanced skills are covered in later courses, the next level being the Beginners Course

NOTES

A very important part of this (and other beginner) training is for you to do homework: the activities get you started but you need to practise them until you proficient and then apply your new skill by extending the activity yourself (ie. do things that are not on the activity sheet).

*To use email successfully, you will need a mobile phone, preferably a modern smartphone.

Perhaps surprisingly, you will also need pen & paper! You are strongly recommended to keep a notebook and write your own notes, you will discover things that are not on our summary sheets.
