Many specialised topics, for example particular hobbies or members’ clubs, might have their own forum on a website.

These are much the same as the big names in social media, but topics are more broken down into specific conversations amongst members, and gives the owners independence and total control. As it is on their website, you will have to register separately at every forum you want to join.
