Criminals will use online buying sites to steal your money
What you need to know
- Criminals advertise products with discounted prices; these items will be non-existent or sub-standard.
- They’ll post adverts on social media, common selling sites, or fake versions of known websites.
- They’ll have photos or videos of the item to try and prove it’s real.
- After you’ve paid, the goods may not turn up, or be what you expected, and the seller disappears.
How can you protect yourself?
- Buying goods online can be a gamble. Take time to do your research every time.
- A photo or a video isn’t proof that the item you’re buying exists. Try to see it in person before parting with your money.
- Take care if you’re not 100% sure the genuine item exists. Think about whether you’re willing to risk losing the money before paying.
- Paying through PayPal or with a credit card will give you better protection than cash or bank transfer.
- Follow the dedicated advice if you’re buying from a known online selling site. Follow the sites advice on ways to pay.
- Carry out thorough research before you buy anything. Always check the seller’s review history and feedback.
