We can keep our files (documents, pictures, videos or music) well organised using folders and giving them sensible traceable names
However, sometimes something cannot be found, maybe
- a download from months ago
- someone else’s file with a random name
- you’ve forgotten a key part of the name
- its been accidentally moved to the wrong folder
- it was created in the wrong folder (*files are created in the active folder)
Sorting files in File Explorer
Often you can find files easier simply by putting them in order, maybe by name or by date of creation/ modification. Possibly by type
- Click the column header
- Name
- Date Modified
- Type
- Click the arrow next to the header to change sort order
Search for files in File Explorer
To search for files in File Explorer, open File Explorer and use the search box to the right of the address bar.
Searching not only searches the file name, but also the contents of documents!
Note: in the picture the Search toolbar is minimised – click the down chevron by the ? to expand it
Search looks in all folders and subfolders within the library or folder you’re viewing. When you tap or click inside the search box, the Search Tools tab appears. As you enter your search terms, your results will start to appear with your search terms highlighted.
