This exercise will look at getting a web page (site) into your web browser
The address bar is the long text box at the top of the browser and shows the current web page address
We instruct our web browser which website to show us by using the address bar – click once in the address bar
- if it is highlighted blue, type in the new address
- if not, use backspace to remove everything there and start typing the address
Web Addresses
Every web site and every web page has an address. For example
- www.google.com is web site (or ‘a domain’)
- www.google.com/help is a web page
- can you see the difference in their addresses?
-
- everything after .com/ or .co.uk/ etc refers to a web page
-
The web site is a collection of web pages, and, confusingly, going to a web site actually results in going to a special web page, the web site’s homepage (the first or entry page).
To go straight to a web address
- you will need to known its address (eg. google.com)
- you will the address bar empty, ready for your typing
- you will need to type it in accurately, exactly as it was intended
- that’s just like a telephone number isn’t it?
Technically, a domain how it was registered (the many options here), eg com, net. co.uk, eu, in, de etc
- Click once in the address bar
- and use backspace to remove everything there, if not
- Type in each of these web addresses below into the address bar
- Press the Enter key when you’ve typed the address
- Press the back button (arrow pointing left) to return to this page
TIP: open a second browser tab to practice in (keeping this page open)

Make a note:
- Write down a description of each website (ie what is it, what’s it useful for?)
- we’ll be looking at many of these websites later
- If you make a mistake typing the address, what happens? Also why, what did you do? (look very carefully at the address)
Remember, you don’t go ‘back’ before going to a new web page – always just go straight to the address bar and type in the address
